Description
Dandelion and Burdock is a licensed vegan restaurant in Sowerby Bridge, a village in West Yorkshire that's a little distance from Hebden Bridge, Halifax and Huddersfield. Like The Globe in Glossop, the D&B doesn't technically fall under the remit of MVVG but is mentioned here because it is close enough for Mancunian vegans/veggies to travel to. Indeed, the D&B is a favourite of several MVVG members.
Getting to the place from Manchester by anything other than car can be a challenge. However, Sowerby Bridge railway station is a short walk away, and the journey from Manchester Victoria takes around 50 minutes. Trains are relatively frequent even at weekends.
The D&B is somewhat disabled friendly. Once you've navigated the descending cobbled street to its door, there are a few low steps to get into the restaurant. However, the toilets are down a flight of stairs so steep that even able-bodied people give them a second look!
The interior of the restaurant is very light, airy and contemporary, an effect helped by two balconies that look out onto the nearby River Calder. Although laid out ostensibly as a restaurant, there's bar-style seating near the entrance, and a settee further down. All in all, the D&B is a very relaxing and comfortable place to spend time.
Cooking takes place to the side of the eating area, in full view, and it's in the quality of its food that the D&B truly shines. A mixture of simple food choices (usually the likes of pies and light pan-frying) along with fresh organic ingredients makes for delicious eating. It's less the case that the D&B is a vegan restaurant, than it is the case that it celebrates what can be done with simple vegetable ingredients. In this light, the fact the D&B is vegan is almost something of a bonus. It's quite simply a top-class restaurant, and even the fussiest eater will not be disappointed.
Prices are very reasonable too, although about average for eating out. A special brunch menu is available on Sunday from 11am to 4pm, with main courses starting from just
