Earth Cafe - Manchester
AVN Score: 6.4 Vegan cafe
Earth cafe offers vegan food in the heart of Manchester. It's actually located in the fashionable Northern Quarter of the city centre, just a little distance from both Piccadilly railway station and Piccadilly Gardens/bus station. The nearest Metrolink stop is Shudehill.
Earth is in the basement beneath Manchester Buddhist Centre, and therefore accessible down a flight of stairs. A lift is available within the main Buddhist Centre building, but to get inside you'll need to ascend a small set of steps at the entrance! This makes Earth a little disabled unfriendly. Those in a wheelchair or with a pushchair might prefer Eighth Day Cafe on Oxford Road, which although being in a basement has full disabled access.
Everything at Earth is vegan, although like many such establishments they advertise themselves as being a vegetarian Cafe. There's one exception: you can specify dairy milk in your hot drink, and cappuccinos and lattes are available, as in most cafes. Despite being in the same building as the Buddhist Centre, there is apparently no link between the two organisations, apart from some nice decor choices and a mutual respect. The cafe is also run along Buddhist principles.
Earth is also a juice bar, so you can order a variety of fruit juices and smoothies.
The food is by all accounts excellent, and inexpensive. Earth operates a buffet-style canteen approach. The cheapest option is a salad bowl, at £2, in which you can select from the salad bar. For £3.50, you can have any main choice plus a side (which typically includes a salad choice or rice/veggies). For £5, you can have a plate full of any four options, including mains. Drinks are very reasonably priced too.
For dessert there's a wide choice of cake. All the food can also be boxed for take-away.
Earth has a nice vibe and is generally a great place to hang out. It hosts live events, such as music and poetry evenings, along with photography exhibitions.
